RN – Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

The Veterans Medical Center (VAMC) in Richmond, VA, is excited to add more nurses to the Spinal Cord Injury Department. The VAMC is a general medical and surgical facility. They provide health care services to veterans in central and southern Virginia.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to any part of the spinal cord or nerves at the end of the spinal canal.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform comprehensive systems of assessment at the beginning of the shift utilizing the shift assessment form.
  • Experience in Med/ Surg is a plus.
  • Record Vital Signs (V/S), Intake/Output (I/O), and additionally order measurements every 15 minutes to 4 hours.
  • Turn patients every 2 hours, checking for incontinence or drainage.
  • Perform active/passage range of motion on all bedridden patients.
  • Complete all ordered treatments and dressings.
  • Intake and output of fluids are assessed every shift, more frequently if indicated by specific standard nursing drug care.
  • Change IV, A-Line, and central line dressings every 72 hours. Change IV and pressure line tubing every 72 hours; hyperalimentation tubing and filter every 24 hours.
  • Reviews all lab data, and electronic medical records.
  • Briefly document details on the 24-hour report.
  • Conduct bedside rounds with the previous nurse assigned to the patient. Update incoming nurse.
  • Prepare and administer injections and/or enemas.

  

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of two years of current experience in a related field.
  • BLS
  • ACLS certification
  • Bachelor’s degree

HOURS:

All shifts in 24 hours/7 days per week/365 days per year. The schedule to be determined by the Manager at the VA.

Salary: $60,000.00 – $65,000.00 per year
